The latest iPhone 17, along with the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air, introduces a USB-C port positioned at the bottom of the device. Transitioning from older models means your previous Lightning accessories will no longer be compatible. However, the USB-C port offers significantly enhanced capabilities.

When paired with a USB-C cable and a compatible new charger, your iPhone can be charged from zero to full much more quickly than before. This port also enables connections to external displays, additional storage solutions, camera accessories, and more. Here’s an overview of what’s possible with your new device and its modernized port.

USB-C is typically a universal standard, so you don’t need to worry about compatibility badges or charts. iOS is designed to automatically recognize most standard accessories upon connection. The key difference lies in cable quality: some USB-C cables are designed solely for charging, while others support both power and data transfer. To maximize data transfer speeds on iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, you should use a USB-3 rated cable capable of speeds up to 10Gbps.

Regarding charging, the box includes a sturdy woven USB-C cable that supports charging-only functions. For higher charging speeds, Apple offers the option to purchase a 40-watt power adapter or similar high-capacity chargers from other brands, such as Anker. This setup allows you to significantly cut down charging times and streamline your cable collection, as all Apple devices—including AirPods, MacBooks, and iPads—can now be powered with USB-C cables.

The new USB-C port also transforms your iPhone into a portable power bank, capable of charging other devices on the go. By connecting compatible USB-C or SD card readers, you can easily browse files directly on your iPhone through the Files app. Photographers can offload images from SD cards quickly or store ProRes 4K videos while recording, thanks to USB-3 storage solutions that support the maximum transfer rates enabled by the iPhone’s internal hardware.

Connecting peripherals is straightforward—plug in wired keyboards, microphones, or Ethernet adapters directly via USB-C. Wired internet connections become accessible with a simple Ethernet adapter, ensuring reliable and speedy connectivity. For audio, many users prefer wired headphones; now, with USB-C support, you can use high-quality headphones like Apple’s USB-C EarPods or other compatible models interchangeably across your iPhone, Mac, or iPad.

USB-C multi-port hubs dramatically expand connectivity options, allowing you to connect external displays, power sources, and various USB devices simultaneously through a single dongle. These hubs are compact but versatile; for example, a small $25 hub can handle multiple connections—including external monitors and charging—making it ideal for professional setups or on-the-go use. Keep in mind, the iPhone’s power output to such hubs is limited to approximately 4.5 watts, so if you connect power-hungry peripherals, an additional external power source may be necessary.
