A recent survey conducted in the United States among iPhone users suggests that nearly one-third of them might consider switching to Samsung or Google to get their hands on a foldable smartphone this year, instead of waiting for the anticipated release of the iPhone Fold next year.
The survey results contain both encouraging and concerning insights for Apple, but some of the figures seem somewhat exaggerated. Conducted by SellCell with a sample of 2,000 iPhone owners, the survey attempts to provide a significant perspective, assuming the respondents accurately reflect the broader US iPhone user base.
One notable statistic claims that 68.3% of current iPhone owners intend to upgrade to the next iPhone 17, which appears quite high given the typical four- to five-year cycle most people follow with their smartphones. Moreover, about 30.3% of participants indicated they would prefer to purchase a foldable device this year rather than wait for Apple’s foldable offering next year. This suggests a potential interest in models like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 or the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, as shown above.
However, there’s a logical inconsistency in these numbers. If the same group plans to upgrade to the iPhone 17 and also consider switching brands within the same year, it raises doubts about the survey’s accuracy. The data seem to combine responses of those planning to upgrade with those contemplating switching brands, which might overstate the actual willingness to switch early.
Despite these discrepancies, the survey does present some positive news for Apple. The majority of respondents, around 66%, indicated they plan to upgrade to the iPhone 17, up from 61.9% who did so for the iPhone 16 last year.
On a different note, nearly half of iPhone users—about 49%—stated that they are not attracted to Android devices. Nevertheless, many expressed concerns about Android becoming more appealing due to AI advancements (13%), pricing strategies (11%), camera improvements (11%), and foldable technology (9%).
What are your thoughts? Could nearly a third of iPhone users truly switch brands simply to access a foldable phone a year earlier? Share your insights below.
