Capturing live concert moments is one of the most demanding challenges for any camera system. The lighting can shift rapidly—from dim, shadowy scenes to intense, flashing strobes—while the performers are constantly shifting positions, and the audience’s energy level adds an unpredictable element to the atmosphere.
Over the weekend, photographer Ryan Russell tested Apple’s newest flagship phone under these chaotic conditions during a Coheed and Cambria / Taking Back Sunday concert. His shots demonstrate the impressive capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro Max in real-world, high-intensity environments.
If you’re familiar with alternative, punk, or emo rock scenes, you’ve probably come across Ryan Russell’s iconic photographic work. His portfolio includes memorable sessions with bands like Fugazi, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, and Death Cab for Cutie. I first encountered his work during my teenage years, many years back in the MySpace era, especially of Taking Back Sunday—one of the subjects of his recent iPhone 17 Pro Max shots.
Years later, our professional paths crossed when I featured one of his shots of Elton John’s farewell concert, shot with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, on 9to5Mac. Now, I had the chance to see things from his perspective again, as he used the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max from inside the photo pit.
The environment was classic rock festival chaos: vibrant stage lights, stark contrasts between illuminated performers and shadowed areas, and musicians in perpetual motion. Despite these challenging conditions, Russell’s shared images still shine through with clarity and detail.
