Apple announced the latest iPhone 17 on Tuesday, alongside the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what’s new with the iPhone 17.
The most noticeable change from the iPhone 16 is the new color palette. The iPhone 17 is available in Lavender, Sage, Mist Blue, White, and Black. While the color names remain the same, the shades have been updated—Black appears lighter, and White is brighter than before.
For the first time in a standard iPhone model, the iPhone 17 introduces ProMotion technology, bringing smoother scrolling and responsive visuals. It sports a slightly larger display at 6.3 inches, thanks to thinner bezels, compared to 6.1 inches on the iPhone 16.
The device now features Ceramic Shield 2, enhancing durability with added protective features. All models now boast a peak outdoor brightness of 3000 nits—double the previous year’s 2000 nits—combined with an anti-reflective coating, promising twice the contrast when outdoors.
Under the hood, the iPhone 17 is powered by the new A19 chip, which offers significant performance boosts. Designed with advanced AI capabilities, the processor includes upgraded Neural Accelerators that greatly improve machine learning tasks, matching MacBook Pro levels of performance. Additionally, the GPU performance has increased by 20% over the A18, boosting gaming and graphics-intensive applications.
Battery life and charging have also seen improvements. The iPhone 17 supports Qi2.2 wireless charging with up to 25W fast charging via Q2.2 or MagSafe chargers. It now supports 40W fast charging, enabling the phone to reach 50% charge in just 20 minutes, a notable reduction from past times.
Camera enhancements include a new 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide Camera, marking a fourfold increase from the previous 12MP ultra wide lens. This upgrade allows for full-resolution 12MP macro photos and offers a default 24MP ultra wide shot, with the option to capture 48MP images. Despite these improvements, it features Hybrid Focus Pixels instead of the previous Focus Pixels, which might result in autofocus performance differences.
A major feature update is the all-new Center Stage front camera. Now equipped with an 18MP square sensor, it allows switching between portrait and landscape shots without rotating the phone. This sensor enables Center Stage to automatically adjust framing during video calls and selfies, maintaining your visibility even as you move. The front camera also supports dual recording, capturing video simultaneously from both front and back cameras.
The iPhone 17 debuts Apple’s in-house N1 wireless networking chip, enhancing overall wireless performance and adding Bluetooth 6 support. It also offers precise dual-frequency GPS for more accurate navigation, including support for India’s NavIC system.
Size-wise, slight changes have been made: the iPhone 17 is marginally heavier, thicker, taller, and narrower than its predecessor. These minor adjustments are part of overall design refinements.
Pricing starts at $799 for the base model with 256GB of storage—an improvement over last year, which began at $899. The 512GB version is now priced at $999, down from $1099. Absent this year is the standard iPhone 17 Plus model.
Preorders open at 5:00 AM PT on September 12, with in-store availability beginning September 19.
