The buzz surrounding the iPhone 17 Pro indicates a higher starting price and a reduction in storage variants. Recent leaks from Weibo suggest that the base price will be $1,049 for the 256GB model, compared to $999 for 128GB on the iPhone 16 Pro. This shift eliminates the 128GB option, leaving consumers to choose between 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB configurations, down from four options available last year.
Apple has a history of adjusting storage options to justify price hikes. In 2023, the company increased the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s starting price from $1,099 to $1,199 and moved to a 256GB base storage model. This strategy provided added value, making the price increase more palatable. The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro appears to continue this approach.
A recent leak from last week indicated a possible $50 increase for the Pro lineup, though without detailed storage specifics. This week’s update from Instant Digital confirms that the iPhone 17 Pro will start at 256GB, setting expectations ahead of the September launch. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is also anticipated to begin at 256GB, while the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are expected to start at 128GB.
Pricing for the entire lineup is projected to be $799 for the base model—matching previous years—along with the Air replacing the Plus at $949. The iPhone 17 Pro will likely be priced at $1,049, and the Pro Max at $1,249, each increasing by $50 from their previous versions. The question remains whether the Pro Max will see a higher starting storage tier, but this seems unlikely at this stage.
