The iPhone 17 Pro Max has solidified its position as the top performer in smartphone battery longevity, as demonstrated by Mrwhosetheboss’s recent battery endurance comparison. During this simulated usage test, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra, a large flagship device, lasted just under 12 hours at 11 hours and 58 minutes. By contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro Max astonishingly endured for approximately 13 hours before shutting down.
It’s worth noting that this test was conducted using the UK variant of the 17 Pro Max, which features a physical SIM card tray. The US version, offering exclusively eSIM support and equipped with an even larger battery, likely exceeds this total by at least half an hour.
While the Pro Max leads the pack, all new iPhone 17 series models performed commendably. The iPhone Air was the first to exhaust its charge at 7 hours and 18 minutes. Three hours later, the standard iPhone 17 succumbed, followed shortly after by the iPhone 17 Pro. This left the larger-screen models to compete for the longest-lasting device.
Remarkably, last year’s flagship, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, previously outperformed Samsung’s 2025 flagship in similar tests, clocking in at 12 hours and 15 minutes. The incremental upgrade from the 16 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max implies an actual real-world battery life increase of approximately one to two hours.
Apple claims the 17 Pro Max can support up to 35 hours of continuous video streaming. Although impressive, everyday usage involves more demanding tasks than straightforward video playback from the Apple TV app, which accounts for the discrepancy between official ratings and actual performance—around 13 hours in real-world scenarios.
Mrwhosetheboss’s test involved activities such as browsing social media platforms like TikTok and X, using productivity apps like Slack, recording videos, and streaming music via Spotify. In a similar evaluation by Chinese tech journalist Geekerwan using the physical SIM tray models, the battery survivor advantage was even more pronounced, with the 17 Pro Max lasting nearly two hours longer than its predecessor. Notably, the base iPhone 17 also came close to matching the battery life of the previous generation’s Pro Max.
