Apple has shifted away from leather products, replacing them with FineWoven, but customer feedback led to the discontinuation of FineWoven. Now, a leaker named Majin Bu suggests that a new leather alternative is in development for the upcoming iPhone 17 cases.
Previously, Apple eliminated all leather items, including iPhone cases, Apple Watch bands, and AirTag holders, aiming for greater eco-friendliness and carbon neutrality by 2030. FineWoven served as the main replacement, but it didn’t resonate well, especially in terms of appearance over time.
According to Majin Bu, Apple is exploring a new synthetic fabric that offers a more technical aesthetic, moving away from the luxurious look of leather. This material is expected to feature a visible textile texture and come in vibrant colors such as green, orange, blue, and purple. Importantly, the new fabric is anticipated to avoid the durability issues faced by FineWoven, all while aligning with Apple’s environmental objectives.
Some images hint at the design, showcasing a textured fabric that could elevate the look and feel of future cases. The leaker also mentions that the synthetic material might include features like an integrated lanyard loop, at least on silicone cases, though it remains uncertain if this will be consistent across all products. Additionally, there’s speculation about “Liquid Glass cases,” which might combine a striking appearance with durability, expanding the variety of case options available to users.
