Following the cancellation of the problematic FineWoven iPhone case last year, Apple is reportedly exploring a new alternative premium material to replace leather cases. The latest rumors suggest the name “TechWoven” for this new case material, which may be offered as a standalone accessory.
According to leaker Majin Bu, the new material hints at a design that’s less smooth and velvet-like, leaning more towards a textured textile feel. These high-end cases serve as eco-conscious alternatives to leather, aligning with Apple’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
Images leaked by the same source show several packaging mockups in a variety of colors, including black, brown, blue, green, and purple. The visual cues suggest that TechWoven might be made from recycled plastics, such as rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate), a fabric composed of repurposed plastic bottles that reduces the dependence on virgin plastics and lowers carbon emissions compared to traditional polyester.
Additionally, Majin Bu indicates that the new cases will feature lanyard holes on both sides near the bottom, consistent with Apple’s silicone case styles.
A recent image showcases the material’s texture and color options, hinting at a more rugged, textile-inspired finish that might appeal to eco-conscious consumers.
The potential release of this new TechWoven case raises questions about its features and whether it will come with accessories like a crossbody strap—unclear whether it’s an official Apple product or from partners like Belkin or Incase. An announcement could be imminent, potentially preceding Apple’s expected iPhone 17 launch event scheduled for early September.
