Earlier this week, we highlighted that although much is known about the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, a significant design element remained uncertain ahead of Apple’s “Awe dropping” event. Recent reports, however, suggest a more striking change may be on the way.
There have been two conflicting rumors regarding the design of the back panels for these models. Both agree that the camera bump will extend into a full-width camera bar across the top of the device. The disagreement lies in the rest of the phone’s rear: one theory proposes a seamless glass back similar to the iPhone 16 Pro, while the other hints at a two-tone metal and glass construction, featuring a dedicated MagSafe area.
So far, the two-tone concept appeared more like a potential schematic detail than a confirmed design. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has recently weighed in, indicating that the more radical redesign is indeed likely.
Gurman states that “the latest high-end versions, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, will feature new backs that introduce a fresh look to the camera sections.” He elaborates further:
> “The phone’s back looks different, including a new camera layout that spans the entire top third of the device, along with a new cutout area on the lower two-thirds, which also serves as the wireless charging zone.”
This description aligns more closely with the rumored aluminum-and-glass design leaks rather than an all-glass back. If this report proves accurate, Apple is set to implement one of the most noticeable design updates to the iPhone Pro series in years. This could also lay the groundwork for the anticipated all-glass iPhone 20, as Apple moves towards incorporating more metal into its premium models.
