The iPhone 17 series introduces Ceramic Shield 2, featuring an innovative anti-reflective coating. However, conventional screen protectors may not be compatible with this advanced display technology.
A key highlight of the iPhone 17 lineup is the new Ceramic Shield 2, applicable across models such as the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Air. According to Apple, this upgrade includes a specially designed coating that offers three times the scratch resistance and enhanced anti-reflective properties aimed at reducing glare. In theory, this should give users the confidence to go without additional screen protection.
Despite these innovations, recent testing reveals that most standard screen protectors significantly diminish the new anti-reflective benefits. An independent study by Astropad found that when a typical screen protector is applied, the protective anti-reflective coating’s effectiveness is largely nullified. The coating relies on direct contact with air to function optimally, but a glass protector with adhesive interferes with this contact, reducing or even doubling the reflectivity of the display.
Astropad suggests that only screen protectors with integrated anti-reflective coatings, like their Fresh Coat product, will preserve the display’s full capabilities. A comprehensive review of these findings can be found in their full study.
