When Apple unveils the iPhone 17 in a few weeks, it will mark the beginning of a new record-breaking era for flagship models, surpassing a milestone set 15 years ago. While it may take over a year to beat this record, rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 will be the first to break the long-standing benchmark.
The record in question was held by the iPhone 4, launched in June 2010, which remained Apple’s flagship until October 2011—almost 16 months on the market. That period was notable because Apple shifted its flagship release from summer to fall in that year, allowing the iPhone 4 to maintain its top position for nearly 16 months.
During that era, many customers expecting the iPhone 5 were disappointed as Apple released the iPhone 4S instead—a model that looked similar to the iPhone 4 but introduced notable improvements such as Siri, a better camera, and enhanced performance.
The iPhone 4 also had several notable release moments: AT&T launched it first as the exclusive carrier in the U.S., followed by Verizon six months later, and after various delays, the white version finally arrived after ten months.
Since then, no model has matched the iPhone 4’s record of a 15-month flagship run. The closest was the iPhone 11 Pro, which lasted about 13 months before being succeeded by the iPhone 12 Pro amidst pandemic-related delays. Others, like the iPhone SE (including the SE 2 and the iPhone 16e), experienced gaps longer than four years due to different product strategies, not standard flagship cycles.
Looking ahead, if current information is accurate, the iPhone 18 isn’t expected until spring 2027. This means the iPhone 17 could hold its position as Apple’s main flagship for around 18 months, outlasting the iPhone 4 and setting a new record for the longest continuous run of a standard iPhone.
| Model | Launch Date | Replacement Expected | Approximate Duration |
|—————|————————-|————————|———————————-|
| iPhone 17 | September 2025 | iPhone 18, Spring 2027 | About 18 months (~550 days) |
| iPhone 4 | June 24, 2010 | iPhone 4S October 2011 | Nearly 16 months |
| iPhone 11 Pro | September 20, 2019 | iPhone 12 Pro October 2020 | About 13 months |
| iPhone (original) | June 29, 2007 | iPhone 3G July 2008 | Around 12.4 months |
An important difference from the iPhone 4 era is the current presence of the Pro lineup. The long gap between the iPhone 4 and 4S created frustration among users waiting for meaningful upgrades. Today, however, new Pro and Air models are launched annually, alongside anticipated innovations like a foldable iPhone—the most significant hardware change since the device’s inception. Despite this, the iPhone 17 is poised to hold the record for the longest interval between flagship models without an overhaul of the standard line.
