During yesterday’s Apple event, battery longevity emerged as a key highlight for the iPhone 17 Pro series. Interestingly, the top-performing battery models of both the Pro and Pro Max are not accessible for purchase worldwide.
In the U.S., Apple advertises 30 hours of continuous video streaming on the iPhone 17 Pro, and 35 hours on the Pro Max. However, in regions such as the UK and across Europe, the official specifications indicate slightly reduced battery life—28 hours for the Pro and 33 hours for the Pro Max—two hours less than the U.S. versions.
This discrepancy stems from the device’s internal design. Apple’s new approach this year involves leveraging the space previously occupied by the eSIM to increase battery capacity, but only in models that omit the physical SIM card slot. These eSIM-only versions are sold in select markets, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
In markets like Europe, Australia, and China, only models with traditional physical SIM trays are available. Since these models have smaller batteries due to the physical SIM slot, they do not offer the same maximum battery life figures as the eSIM-only counterparts. Nevertheless, even the physical SIM versions outperform the previous generation, the iPhone 16 Pro, which offers around 22 hours of video playback. The new iPhone 17 Pro with a physical SIM slot extends this to approximately 28 hours, representing a 27% increase year-over-year. Similarly, the Pro Max jumps from about 29 hours in the last generation to 33 hours now, roughly a 13% improvement.
The gains are even more substantial for eSIM-only variants, which provide an extra two hours of usage compared to their physical SIM equivalents. It appears that Apple plans to sell eSIM-only iPhone 17 Pro models in regions such as the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
