Apple has recently released an update for its Final Cut suite, now fully compatible with the new camera capabilities of the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro. Here’s a look at the latest enhancements.
As highlighted during last week’s Awe Dropping event, the iPhone 17 series, especially the Pro and Pro Max models, introduce a range of new hardware and software features tailored for video enthusiasts, from casual users to seasoned professionals.
One notable addition is the Center Stage camera, which makes use of the front camera’s square sensor to automatically adjust the aspect ratio, including a seamless switch to landscape mode—all without users having to rotate their phone physically and risking drops. This feature is available on all new models, including the standard iPhone 17.
The iPhone 17 Pro stands out with ProRes RAW support, offering filmmakers greater precision and control during editing. Additionally, it introduces Genlock support, enabling advanced video techniques like time-splicing and bullet-time effects when paired with compatible hardware.
To support these new capabilities, Apple is updating its suite of creative video tools, including Compressor and Motion. The latest updates focus on Final Cut Pro for Mac, Final Cut Pro for iPad, and the new Final Cut Camera app for iPhone.
Here are some of the key points from these updates:
Final Cut Pro 11.2 for Mac:
- Enhanced controls for ProRes RAW videos captured on supported iPhone models, allowing adjustments in exposure, color temperature, tint, and demosaicing.
- Improved handling of Apple Log 2 footage, maintaining the original scene’s vibrancy through specific LUT application.
- Stability improvements and increased performance.
Final Cut Pro 2.3 for iPad:
- Similar advanced controls for ProRes RAW footage with flexibility in exposure and color adjustments.
- Enhanced playback and editing of Apple Log 2 footage.
- New accessibility features, including a menu bar that can be accessed by swiping down from the top of the screen or moving the pointer to the top (requires iPadOS 26).
Final Cut Camera 2.0:
- Capable of capturing ProRes RAW in full-frame resolution with open gate.
- Record in high dynamic range with a broader color spectrum using Apple Log 2 in ProRes or HEVC.
- New options for timecode, including Time of Day, Record Run, and external inputs, for precise footage identification (requires iOS 26).
- Supports Genlock for syncing multiple video sources accurately.
- Quick access to the 200mm telephoto lens (8x zoom).
- Dynamic orientation switching for the front-facing camera, accommodating vertical or horizontal filming regardless of hold style.
Note: Some features are dependent on specific supported iPhone models.
Additionally, accessory discounts are available on Amazon, providing opportunities for users to enhance their filming setup with compatible gear.
