Apple Shares Two Benefits Of Your iPhone's New Thread Radio

Apple began integrating Thread radios into its products in late 2023, but has not extensively elaborated on this development. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max were the inaugural models to feature the new technology, with additional iPhones, iPads, and Macs soon to follow. Recently, an important figure from Apple shed light on this innovation.

Insights on Thread Radio Advantages for the iPhone

Today, The Verge shared a comprehensive interview featuring key contributors to the Matter smart home initiative. Jennifer Pattison Tuohy spoke with various leaders from organizations collaborating on Matter.

Among those interviewed was Vividh Siddha, the President of Thread Group and an influential Director at Apple.

During the discussion, Siddha addressed the inclusion of Thread radios in the iPhone and shared the following insights:

Both Apple and Google have made announcements regarding the integration of Thread radios into mobile devices. The aim is to cater to early adopters. For instance, a new smart home user who purchases a bulb and switch from Ikea might encounter limitations when trying to set up automations. By integrating Thread into mobile devices, we empower them to evolve into a border router.

Moreover, it is essential to ensure that users can operate vital accessories, such as their front door locks, during power outages. If the infrastructure is offline—like your Wi-Fi or Thread border router—being able to access your home or manage other smart home functions is crucial. These scenarios are among the primary uses the technology was intended for, though the applications extend beyond these examples.

Siddha’s expertise positions him uniquely to discuss these developments, given his dual role at Apple and as President of Thread Group.

In essence, while Thread radios hold numerous future possibilities, Siddha highlighted two key reasons for their presence in iPhones:

  1. Facilitating smart home automation without the need for additional hardware.
  2. Allowing smart devices to function even during power outages.

These factors are especially pertinent, marking the beginning of what the integration of Thread radios can achieve.

Thread Radios Pave the Way for Apple’s Smart Home Transition

Apple products Home app lineup

In the upcoming months, Apple is anticipated to launch a new HomePod device, along with an updated Apple TV 4K and the HomePod mini 2 later in the year. Looking ahead to 2026, we can expect new smart doorbell and camera products as well.

The introduction of Thread radios in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max may not yield immediate and obvious benefits, but I believe that over time, the advantages of this technology will become increasingly apparent.
