When your iPhone takes an unexpected dive into water, the immediate panic and rush to save it can lead to ill-advised attempts to dry out the device. Traditionally, the go-to solution for wet iPhones has been submerging them in a bag of rice to absorb moisture. However, Apple’s recent guidance debunks this age-old method, cautioning users that using rice can potentially inflict harm on the smartphone.

The tech powerhouse warns that rice particles may enter the phone’s charging port, increasing the risk of damage. Likewise, inserting cotton swabs, paper towels, or resorting to compressed air and heating devices for drying are discouraged, as they can exacerbate the situation.

Apple highlights a crucial indicator of liquid exposure: an on-screen alert in case liquid is detected in the connector. This notification restricts wired charging temporarily, allowing only emergency wireless charging. While the scenario may seem dire, Apple offers practical solutions to address the issue without resorting to risky drying techniques.

Here are Apple’s recommendations to rectify wet iPhone issues safely:

  • Gently tap the iPhone against your hand with the connector facing downwards to dislodge any trapped liquid.
  • Place the device in a well-ventilated area to facilitate drying.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before attempting to charge the iPhone to minimize the chances of causing further damage.

By following these guidelines, users can mitigate the effects of liquid exposure on their iPhones and increase the likelihood of restoring functionality without compromising the device’s integrity. Remember, when it comes to wet iPhones, ditch the rice and opt for Apple’s approved methods for a safer and more effective recovery process.
