Zohran Mamdani, recently celebrated as New York City’s first Muslim mayor, was visibly moved to tears during an emotionally charged moment with a Pakistani woman who commended his compassion and leadership, attributing his efforts to positive change throughout the city.
Samina, originally from Lahore, Pakistan, met Mamdani during a one-on-one session called “The Mayor Is Listening,” where she expressed sincere gratitude for his compassionate governance.
Their dialogue, which was conducted in both Urdu and English, deeply touched the mayor, causing him to pause briefly before moving on to meet the next resident.
When she arrived at the studio, Samina read from notes she had prepared, apologizing for her limited English skills.
“Sorry, my English isn’t very good,” she said. Then she added, “First and foremost, congratulations. Your empathy makes you fit to lead, and thank you for instilling kindness in people in a divided world.”
She also urged the mayor to keep shining as “a beacon of hope during these challenging times,” praising him for restoring optimism among New Yorkers.
Mamdani responded warmly in Urdu and was visibly emotional when he learned that Samina was from Lahore, reminiscing about his own visit there.
“I’ve been to Lahore once — it’s a beautiful city,” he shared, eyes welling with tears, expressing gratitude for her kind words and support.
After this heartfelt exchange, the mayor took a brief moment away before continuing with his scheduled appointments.
