Bethesda, a subsidiary of Microsoft, announced on Tuesday that the highly anticipated space exploration game “Starfield” will now be released on Sony’s PlayStation 5, marking a departure from its previous exclusivity to Xbox consoles and PC since its launch in 2023. Developed by the same Bethesda team behind popular series like “Fallout” and “The Elder Scrolls,” “Starfield” was previously only available on the latest Xbox models. Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, for $7.5 billion in 2021.
Earlier in 2023, Microsoft also acquired Activision Blizzard, the publisher of hits such as “World of Warcraft,” “Candy Crush,” and “Call of Duty,” aiming to boost Xbox hardware sales. Despite this, Microsoft committed to keeping the “Call of Duty” franchise accessible on PlayStation.
However, sales of the Xbox Series X and S consoles, launched in 2020, have not met expectations, prompting Microsoft to broaden the availability of some titles to attract more gamers. By 2025, Microsoft plans to release the next installment of its “Halo” series on PlayStation for the first time, signifying a shift in its strategies.
Microsoft continues to invest in hardware development, with an upcoming console codenamed “Project Helix,” which is expected to support both PC and Xbox games. The new machine promises a significant leap in graphics technology, aiming to deliver more realistic and immersive gaming experiences. Developer units are expected to be available to studios next year, while no official release date has been announced for “Project Helix.” Meanwhile, Microsoft’s gaming division is under new leadership, with former AI chief Asha Sharma taking over from Phil Spencer.
