Wyrdsong was unveiled three years ago during Gamescom’s Opening Night. This RPG, created by veterans from Bethesda and Obsidian, has encountered various challenges since its announcement. Brought to life by Something Wicked Games, Wyrdsong generated excitement among Elder Scrolls enthusiasts who were hopeful for a release before The Elder Scrolls 6. However, the studio shared last year that it had to significantly reduce its workforce. The latest updates indicate that while the project continues, it may not align with its initial vision.
NetEase initially invested over $13 million into the game’s development, but that amount has proven insufficient in today’s gaming landscape. Subsequent efforts to secure additional funding have been unsuccessful, leading the studio to implement budget cuts to prolong development and complete the title.
Studio co-founder Jeff Gardiner stated to PCGamer, “We’re down to a skeleton crew, and I am continuing to work hard to try to find further investments or publishing offers for the game. I’m hopeful for some progress this year, but we’re just trying to endure and see it through the storm, which many expected to be over by 2025, a timeline I currently don’t see as realistic. It’s very challenging right now.”

Gardiner pointed out that the scale and depth of modern games complicate matters further. Historically, games were shorter and players bought them more frequently. In contrast, today’s expansive titles can capture players’ attention for hundreds or even thousands of hours, with Skyrim serving as a prime example of this trend.
Wyrdsong remains a work in progress, backed by a talented team with extensive industry experience. However, Gardiner expressed concern that without securing additional funding and personnel, the possibility of the game never launching looms. “It saddens me to think about it not reaching the market. That’s why I’m working tirelessly to ensure that it does,” he concluded.
