Social media rumors have been swirling about a nationwide internet outage in Pakistan, causing anxiety among users. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has stepped in to clarify that there is no such disruption. They emphasized that claims about internet service interruptions on January 15 are false and lack any factual foundation.
PTA assured the public that internet services remain steady and fully functional across the country. The ongoing activity involves routine maintenance of submarine cables, which will not impact internet connectivity. Recently, internet speeds in Pakistan have been inconsistent, often due to undersea cable maintenance, spectrum shortages, or security concerns.
Last month, the government approved an auction for 600 MHz spectrum, aiming to enhance internet speed and open the door for 5G technology nationwide. According to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index, Pakistan ranked 97th globally for mobile internet speed, averaging 24.79 Mbps in November. Fixed broadband speeds were even lower, placing the country at 146th with just 18.27 Mbps.
In November 2025, Pakistan significantly increased its international internet capacity by launching the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable system, stretching 19,200 kilometers. This high-capacity fiber optic network connects Pakistan to digital hubs between Singapore and France, offering over 100 terabits per second of capacity and one of the lowest latency routes between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe. The country was allocated 13.2 Tbps of this capacity, with 4 Tbps activated immediately—supporting cloud services, data centers, fintech, e-commerce, streaming, and other digital sectors.
