The White House announced that the United States considers “any armed attack” on Qatar as a threat to American security and will extend security guarantees to the Gulf nation. The presidential order, signed by Donald Trump, states that the U.S. aims to protect Qatar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity from external aggression.
In case of an attack, the U.S. pledges to take appropriate measures, including diplomatic efforts, economic sanctions, or military action if necessary, to defend both U.S. interests and those of Qatar, restore peace, and stabilize the region.
This move follows an Israeli attack on Qatar last month, targeting officials from Hamas who were discussing a U.S.-backed peace plan related to the Gaza conflict. The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called Qatar’s Prime Minister from the White House on Monday to apologize for the strikes and assured that such actions would not happen again.
Netanyahu’s visit to Washington for a meeting with President Trump occurred amid a period of increased tension, with Netanyahu previously adopting a defiant stance since the September 9 incident.
Qatar remains a crucial U.S. ally in the Gulf, hosting the region’s largest U.S. military base at al-Udeid, which also serves as a headquarters for elements of U.S. Central Command.
