The White House announced that this Friday’s summit in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is primarily a listening session for the President. The White House emphasized that expectations for a swift Russia-Ukraine ceasefire should be tempered.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt explained, “Only one party involved in this conflict will be present, and this gathering is meant for the President to gain a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of how we might bring this war to a close.”
Trump is scheduled to have a one-on-one discussion with Putin during the event, which will be held in Anchorage, Alaska. There is also potential for him to make future visits to Russia. Leavitt mentioned, “There may be plans down the line for the President to travel to Russia.”
Significant issues still need to be addressed before the talks. Trump has stated that both sides will likely have to cede territory to end the ongoing, deadly conflict that’s lasted over three and a half years. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that Ukraine’s constitution prohibits ceding land without Kyiv’s involvement in negotiations. The White House has not commented on discussions that might be taking place ahead of the meeting between Putin and Trump. Additionally, Trump mentioned on Monday that Zelensky might be invited to future discussions with Putin.
Leavitt added, “The President holds deep respect for all parties involved in this conflict and those working to resolve it.”
