A van crashed through a security barricade near the White House early Wednesday morning, prompting authorities to temporarily close down the area in downtown Washington during rush hour.
The driver was detained, and no injuries were reported after the incident in Lafayette Square, just north of the White House. A bomb squad cleared the vehicle, confirming the scene was safe, according to a Secret Service spokesperson.
“The suspect is currently being questioned by the Secret Service, and criminal charges are forthcoming,” the spokesperson stated.
Security measures in Washington have been heightened due to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. Emergency response vehicles flooded the scene as law enforcement shut off several major streets around the White House, causing traffic jams that blocked commuters and tourists from passing through.
