WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that lets users create and share status updates directly within group chats on its Android beta app.
The recent update, version 2.25.22.11, available through the Google Play Beta Program, brings in group-specific status updates. This allows users to post updates that are only visible to members of a specific group, eliminating the need to tag or notify individuals separately.
Unlike regular status updates, which are shared with selected contacts, these new posts are made from within the group’s info screen and are automatically shared solely among group members. This makes it easier to share important announcements or information without cluttering ongoing chats.
Status updates shared in this manner will automatically vanish after 24 hours, just like standard status posts, helping keep conversations organized and current. Members can view these updates by tapping on the group icon or from the main Updates tab, where group-specific posts are clearly labeled and accessible only to group participants.
WhatsApp is currently testing this feature publicly, with some users starting to see the new functionality pop up in their apps. The company has confirmed that group status updates are secured with end-to-end encryption, ensuring user privacy and data security remain protected.
