Russia issued a strong warning to WhatsApp, Meta’s popular messaging platform, demanding compliance with Russian laws or risk a complete ban. In August, Russian authorities started restricting certain calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, accusing these foreign-owned platforms of refusing to cooperate with law enforcement in cases related to fraud and terrorism.
On Friday, Roskomnadzor, Russia’s federal agency overseeing communications, information technology, and media, reiterated the accusation that Meta’s platform has failed to meet requirements aimed at preventing and fighting crime. The agency warned that if WhatsApp does not adhere to Russian legislation, it could face total blocking.
WhatsApp has accused Moscow of attempting to prevent millions of Russians from accessing secure messaging services. Meanwhile, Russian officials are promoting a state-backed alternative called MAX, which critics argue could be used for user tracking, although state media have dismissed these claims as unfounded.
