Meta’s WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that enables users to view status updates from phone numbers they haven’t saved in their contacts. This change simplifies tracking recent interactions, allowing updates to be visible if you’ve recently messaged or called the contact, even if they aren’t saved. When viewing such status updates, a tilde (~) appears before the contact’s name and phone number, indicating the update originates from an unsaved number linked to a recent interaction.
This update was quietly implemented without an official announcement. If a user receives a status update from an unknown number, WhatsApp might show an introductory message explaining how this occurs. Importantly, privacy settings remain unaffected—users retain full control over who can see their status updates at any time. If a status update comes from someone not saved in your contacts, it indicates they have your number saved in their device. Overall, status visibility still depends on each user’s privacy preferences and recent activity, like messages or calls exchanged.
