Focus Features has finally unveiled the trailer for The Phoenician Scheme, the latest project from Academy Award-winning director Wes Anderson.
Benicio del Toro stars in The Phoenician Scheme as Zsa-zsa Korda, an immensely wealthy European tycoon. Zsa-zsa is the father of ten children—nine sons and a sole daughter, Liesl (played by Mia Threapleton), who is a nun and the lone heir to his fortune. Michael Cera takes on the role of Bjorn, the family’s tutor.
As is typical with Anderson’s films, The Phoenician Scheme boasts an all-star cast that includes Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, and Hope Davis.
The film is directed by Anderson, who co-wrote the screenplay with his frequent collaborator, Roman Coppola. Alongside Anderson, the film is produced by Steven Rales, Jeremy Dawson, and John Peet.
The Phoenician Scheme signifies Anderson’s return to directing after his successful 2023 film, Asteroid City. The latter, which debuted in June 2023, was well-received by critics and earned $54 million against a $25 million budget.
Earlier in 2024, Anderson also wrote and directed The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, an anthology film featuring four short stories based on Roald Dahl’s works. This film gained significant attention, culminating in Anderson winning the Oscar for Best Live Action Short, marking his first Academy Award win.
The Phoenician Scheme is expected to have its debut next month at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, an event where Anderson has showcased several of his previous works, including Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The French Dispatch (2021), and Asteroid City.
Focus Features plans to release The Phoenician Scheme in select theaters on May 30, 2025, followed by a broader rollout on June 6.
