Russian President Vladimir Putin has gifted a luxurious Russian car to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a “personal use” present.
The extravagant gesture underscores the growing rapport between the two leaders, despite facing international isolation and scrutiny over their respective geopolitical actions.
The delivery of the Russian-made vehicle, identified as an Aurus Senat, was orchestrated by the Russian side and received by Kim’s top aides on February 18, as confirmed by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Kim’s sister conveyed his gratitude to Putin, emphasizing the significance of the gift as a testament to the close personal relationship between the two leaders.
Since their meeting in September, Kim and Putin have been actively enhancing bilateral ties, pledging to expand exchanges across various domains. This camaraderie has persisted despite Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine and North Korea’s relentless pursuit of nuclear weapons, demonstrating the multifaceted nature of their collaboration.
According to the Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the Aurus Senat gifted to Kim is Russia’s premier full-size luxury sedan, a vehicle also utilized as Putin’s presidential car. The Russian carmaker describes the Aurus Senat as a pinnacle of opulence and sophistication, embodying the epitome of automotive luxury.
Kim Jong Un, known for his fervent passion for automobiles, has previously showcased his affinity for luxury cars, including a Maybach limousine that he drove to a designated site via a special train from Pyongyang. Reports indicate that Kim maintains a substantial collection of high-end foreign vehicles, which are believed to have been acquired through clandestine means, bypassing international sanctions.
The exchange of lavish gifts between Putin and Kim raises concerns over potential violations of UN Security Council resolutions, particularly those prohibiting the export of luxury goods, such as high-end cars, to North Korea. The South Korean foreign ministry is closely monitoring the situation, urging both Russia and North Korea to adhere to international sanctions frameworks and uphold the resolutions mandated by the UN.
Amid allegations of North Korea providing arms to Russia for deployment in the Ukrainian conflict, both nations have remained mum on the accusations. Nevertheless, the accusations, if proven accurate, would constitute a serious violation of UN sanctions and exacerbate the already strained relationship between North Korea and the global community.
