Venezuela accused neighboring Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday of orchestrating a military provocation in coordination with the US Central Intelligence Agency, aiming to provoke a full-scale military conflict with Venezuela. The Venezuelan government claimed to have detained a group of mercenaries with direct links to American intelligence, alleging their intent was to carry out a false-flag operation in the region.
A false-flag operation involves performing an act that falsely implicates another party to justify military action. Venezuela stated that such an attack was underway in waters bordering Trinidad and Tobago or from territory belonging to either Trinidad or Venezuela, intended to escalate into a large-scale military confrontation.
Vice President Delcy Rodriguez’s official statement did not provide additional details or proof supporting these claims. Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed he authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela. Maduro has previously accused orchestrating false-flag attacks, including a planned bombing at the US embassy in Caracas earlier this October.
The US State Department has yet to respond. Trump has previously authorized several operations, including strikes on maritime vessels believed to be involved in drug trafficking in the Caribbean and Pacific regions. This past Friday, the Pentagon increased its military presence in the Caribbean by deploying the Gerald Ford aircraft carrier strike group.
