United States Vice President JD Vance stated that a negotiated resolution between Russia and Ukraine probably won’t satisfy either side, and any peace agreement will likely leave both Moscow and Kyiv “discontent.” He emphasized that the U.S. is working toward an agreement that both nations can accept.
He mentioned on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo that “It’s not going to make anyone extremely happy. Both the Russians and the Ukrainians, most likely, are going to be displeased with the outcome in the end.”
President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska to negotiate an end to the Ukraine conflict. Trump indicated that Russia and Ukraine are near a ceasefire deal, potentially involving Ukraine ceding significant territory, which could mark the conclusion of a conflict that has lasted over three and a half years.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated Saturday that Ukraine cannot breach its constitution on territorial matters, adding, “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupiers.”
During his recorded Fox News interview on Friday, Vance explained that the United States is working to arrange discussions between Putin, Zelensky, and Trump but noted that it might not be productive for Putin to meet with Zelensky before speaking with Trump.
He said, “Right now, we’re trying to figure out the scheduling and logistics for when these three leaders can sit down and discuss ending this conflict.”
A White House official later confirmed that Trump is open to a summit with both leaders but that current planning is focused on the bilateral meeting requested by Putin.
