The United States announced it’s withdrawing from the UN cultural agency UNESCO.
The US stated its decision to withdraw from UNESCO, known for designating world heritage sites, stemmed from the agency’s perceived anti-Israel bias and promotion of “divisive” agendas.
“Continuing membership in UNESCO does not serve US national interests,” a State Department spokesperson declared in a Tuesday statement.
The UN agency’s chief called the US departure from UNESCO “regrettable, but expected,” AFP reported Tuesday.
“I deeply regret President Trump’s decision to withdraw the US from UNESCO again,” Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated regarding the US exit.
“President Trump is pulling the US from UNESCO – which backs woke, divisive agendas out of sync with the commonsense policies Americans voted for in November,” White House deputy spokesperson Anna Kelly told the New York Post.
This marks the third US withdrawal from UNESCO, after rejoining the UN agency two years ago, France 24 reported.
UNESCO, a United Nations specialized agency, promotes global peace and security via international cooperation in education, arts, sciences, and culture.
