Hurricane Erin, the first storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, has strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane and is moving westward near Puerto Rico, according to satellite imagery from August 16, 2025. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasts additional intensification this afternoon, with the potential for Erin to reach Category 5 status.
Currently, Erin is situated approximately 120 miles northeast of Anguilla, with peak sustained winds of 145 mph. The storm’s swells are affecting the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the Turks and Caicos Islands throughout the weekend. These swells are expected to extend to the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the U.S. East Coast early next week.
Heavy rainfall from Erin is anticipated to impact the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico through Sunday, contributing to potential flooding and hazardous conditions.
