US officials spotted unidentified drones flying over a military base in Washington where Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reside, according to a report by the Washington Post on Wednesday, citing three sources familiar with the matter.
The origin of the drones remains unclear, the sources added. The presence of drones above Fort McNair prompted officials to consider relocating Rubio and Hegseth for safety reasons. However, both secretaries have not been moved, according to a senior administration official.
The publication noted that the U.S. military has intensified its monitoring of potential threats amid increased alert levels due to ongoing tensions between the US and Israel against Iran.
Immediately, Reuters could not verify the report independently. The Pentagon and State Department did not respond to requests for comment. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell refused to address the drones directly, stating, “The department cannot comment on the secretary’s movements for security reasons, and reporting on such movements is highly irresponsible,” he told the Post.
