The United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution backed by Pakistan that reaffirms the right to self-determination for peoples under colonial, foreign, or alien occupation.

The resolution, adopted by consensus, was recommended last month by the Assembly’s Third Committee, which handles social, humanitarian, and cultural issues.

Pakistan has introduced this resolution annually since 1981 to spotlight the struggles of people in occupied territories, especially those in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Palestine, fighting for their fundamental right to self-determination.

By reaffirming the right to self-determination, the UNGA emphasizes its importance in situations where this right is denied, supporting the principles outlined in the UN Charter and related resolutions.

Diplomats note that this resolution is a significant display of global solidarity with oppressed populations and those fighting for their legitimate right to self-determination.

For residents of IIOJK, it highlights international focus on their cause and their aspirations for freedom and dignity, it was observed.

The resolution, co-sponsored by 65 nations across various regions, urges countries involved to immediately end illegal foreign military interventions, occupations, repression, discrimination, and abuse.

It also condemns acts of intervention, aggression, and occupation that have suppressed peoples' rights to self-determination and other human rights worldwide.

The UNGA expressed concern about the plight of millions of refugees and displaced individuals impacted by these conflicts and reaffirmed their right to return safely and voluntarily to their homes.

The resolution calls on the Human Rights Council to pay special attention to violations of human rights, particularly those related to foreign interventions, aggression, or occupation that hinder the right to self-determination.
