A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, leaving destruction and grief in its wake. Afghan volunteers alongside Taliban security forces rushed to assist injured individuals near a military helicopter in Mazar Dara village, Nurgal District, Kunar Province, on September 1, 2025. The quake is among the deadliest in Afghanistan’s recent history, claiming over 800 lives and injuring at least 2,800 as rescue efforts are still underway. The country’s disaster response has been limited by decreasing international aid, primarily due to US funding cuts.
In response, the UK has pledged £1 million (~$1.35 million) in emergency aid. The funds will be channeled through global organizations like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the International Red Cross (IFRC) to provide vital healthcare services and emergency supplies to the hardest-hit regions. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the UK’s ongoing commitment to the Afghan people, stating that this emergency support aims to help deliver critical aid to those most affected.
