Two National Guard members were fatally shot in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, according to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s post on X. Meanwhile, the White House announced that it was under lockdown, with President Donald Trump visiting Florida at the time.
Authorities in Washington also reported a shooting just a block from the White House. One suspect is in custody, and the surrounding area has been secured.
“The president has been informed,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated.
President Trump, who is currently at his Palm Beach resort preparing for Thanksgiving, condemned the attack that critically wounded two National Guard members near the White House. He described the suspect as “the animal that shot the two National Guard members” and expressed that the individual, who was also seriously injured, “will pay a very steep price.”
In a post on Truth Social shortly after the incident, Trump praised the National Guard, the military, and law enforcement, calling them “truly great people,” and declared that he and his administration stand with the victims.
Tragically, both security personnel succumbed to their injuries later. Vice President JD Vance is in Kentucky, and the U.S. Secret Service did not provide an immediate comment.
