A jet carrying Libya’s Army Chief of Staff, Mohammed Ali Ahmed Al-Haddad, lost radio contact shortly after takeoff from Ankara, Turkey, according to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on Tuesday. He stated on X that the aircraft took off at 1710 GMT and contact was lost at 1752 GMT. The minister mentioned the aircraft had requested an emergency landing while flying over Haymana district of Ankara, but no contact was re-established afterward. Four others were aboard the plane, and flight tracking indicated other flights were rerouted away from Ankara’s Esenboga Airport.
Turkey’s defense ministry had announced the visit of Libya’s top military official earlier, noting meetings with Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler, Turkish counterpart Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, and other Turkish military leaders. Although officials haven’t confirmed whether the plane crashed, Turkish broadcasters showed a flash of light near the location where contact was lost with the jet. There has been no immediate response from Libyan authorities.
