About 115 individuals believed to be affiliated with ISIS, suspected of orchestrating attacks during the holiday season, have been detained in Turkey, according to Istanbul’s chief prosecutor on Thursday. The prosecutor’s office reported that he had ordered the arrest of 137 suspects, with 115 currently in custody, based on intelligence suggesting ISIS was planning assaults during Christmas and New Year festivities.
Turkey shares a 559-mile border with Syria, where insurgent groups remain active. Recently, U.S. authorities blamed a lone ISIS gunman for an assault in Palmyra, Syria, on December 13, which resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and an American civilian.
Additionally, Turkey’s intelligence services conducted a recent operation along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, leading to the capture of a Turkish citizen alleged to hold a senior position within ISIS. At the time of his arrest, Mehmet Goren, who has since been transferred to Turkey, faced accusations of organizing suicide bombings targeting civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, and Europe.
