WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump announced plans to meet with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House this Friday. This will be the first time the Republican leader encounters the democratically socialist new mayor-elect, who recently won this month’s mayoral race.
Trump and Mamdani have exchanged criticisms, with Trump notably supporting Mamdani’s opponent, Andrew Cuomo. Conversely, Mamdani has been outspoken against several policies of the Trump administration, including its immigration crackdowns and its response to protests during the Gaza conflict.
“We’ve agreed that the meeting will happen in the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st,” Trump shared on social media Wednesday. Mamdani earlier told reporters that his team had contacted the White House to set up the meeting, fulfilling a promise made to New Yorkers throughout his campaign.
Mamdani’s transition team has yet to comment on Trump’s announcement. Throughout his campaign, Mamdani emphasized opposing Trump’s actions, especially regarding immigration. Trump has previously warned of withholding federal funds from New York if Mamdani won. Mamdani’s imminent swearing-in as mayor is scheduled for January 1, 2026.
