President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he plans to tell a gathering of U.S. generals and admirals in Quantico, Virginia, that they are revered leaders who must stay strong and resilient.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth convened top military officials from around the globe in Quantico on Tuesday—an unusual assembly of the nation’s military leadership in a single location.
“I want to encourage our generals that they are cherished leaders. Stay strong, be tough, intelligent, and compassionate,” Trump told Reuters during an interview.
“It’s simply about team spirit. It’s high time someone recognized that,” he added.
Trump’s presence might overshadow Hegseth, who is anticipated to focus on the importance of maintaining a “warrior ethos” across the armed forces and possibly address other key topics.
U.S. forces are stationed worldwide, including in South Korea, Japan, and various Middle Eastern regions, commanded by officers at the two-, three-, and four-star rank.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has accelerated efforts to reshape the department, dismissing senior generals and admirals as he pushes Trump’s national security agenda and aims to eliminate diversity initiatives he considers discriminatory.
Sources told Reuters that the event is likely to be held at the Marine Corps University in Quantico. Some senior officials with access to U.S. military aircraft are expected to fly into Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
It remains unclear why the gathering isn’t held virtually, given the substantial costs expected for transport and security for such a large assembly.
