Mayor Muriel Bowser states that law enforcement will not cooperate with ICE. Trump warns that non-cooperation could cause crime to “roar back” in the city. The president has already mobilized over 2,000 National Guard troops in Washington, D.C.
Trump announced plans to declare a national emergency and federalize the city after Bowser declared that the city’s police would not share information about individuals residing or entering the U.S. illegally. This move comes amidst criticism of federal overreach, with thousands of protesters demonstrating earlier this month against Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops in August, citing crime as a major issue in the capital.
Trump claimed on Truth Social that crime has plummeted to nearly zero for the first time in decades. Bowser has yet to comment on Trump’s recent statements.
Previously, Trump took control of the metropolitan police and dispatched federal law enforcement, including ICE agents, to patrol streets. The duration of their deployment remains uncertain.
Trump accused “Radical Left Democrats” of pressuring Bowser to defy ICE cooperation, warning that such resistance would lead to a surge in crime. He assured residents and businesses that he wouldn’t let this happen, promising to declare a national emergency and federalize the city if necessary.
Bowser, who had previously praised Trump’s federal law enforcement surge that led to significant crime reductions, recently signed an order for the city to collaborate with federal agencies.
The National Guard functions as a militia answerable to state governors but reports directly to the president when called into federal service.
