WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has indicated that he might implement new tariffs on China if it continues purchasing oil from Russia, similar to the tariffs imposed on India.
During a press briefing on Thursday, the president mentioned that additional trade sanctions “could happen,” although he did not specify any details. This statement comes shortly after Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, accusing India of aiding Russia’s efforts by maintaining its oil imports. Now, China could be the next target, as the U.S. increases pressure on nations engaging in trade with Moscow amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
“Could happen,” Trump told reporters, adding that he expects to reveal more secondary sanctions aimed at compelling Russia to end its aggression in Ukraine. He did not offer further specifics.
“It may happen… I can’t tell you yet,” he said. “We did it with India. We’re probably going to do it with a few others. One of those could be China.”
On Wednesday, Trump implemented an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, on top of the previous 25% tariff, citing India’s continued Russian oil purchases. The White House’s statement did not reference China, which also remains a large buyer of Russian oil.
Last week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned China that it could face new tariffs if it persists in buying Russian oil.
