President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he intends to nominate Sergio Gor, a trusted aide, as the next U.S. ambassador to India. Gor will also serve as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. Currently, he leads the White House Presidential Personnel Office and will remain in this role until confirmed by the Senate for his new appointment.
Trump described Gor as a close friend who has been vital in his campaigns, published his best-selling books, and managed a major Super PAC supporting his movement. The President emphasized the importance of having a dependable representative for the world’s most populated region to advance his agenda and help restore America’s greatness.
U.S.-India relations have suffered due to ongoing trade tensions, particularly after India resisted U.S. efforts to reduce tariffs on agricultural and dairy products, despite bilateral trade exceeding $190 billion. In retaliation, Trump implemented a 25% tariff on imports from India, which he announced would double to 50% starting August 27, mainly due to India’s increased purchases of Russian oil. Notably, similar tariffs have not been applied to China, which remains the leading buyer of Russian energy.
Additionally, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently criticized India for profiting from its ramped-up Russian oil imports amid the Ukraine conflict, calling the situation unacceptable. The strained trade relationship is likely to be a key focus during Gor’s tenure as ambassador.
