Donald Trump on Monday criticized New York’s Democratic governor for endorsing mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, calling him a “Liddle’ communist” in a social media post. Mamdani, a 33-year-old New York State assemblyman and openly socialist, shook up U.S. politics and the Democratic establishment in June by winning the party’s primary for mayor. He still leads in polls heading into the November 4 election to become New York City’s next mayor.
“Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has Endorsed the ‘Liddle’ Communist,” Trump wrote. “This is a shocking development and a terrible sign for New York City. How could this happen? Washington is watching this very carefully.”
Mamdani’s campaign focuses on reducing the economic disparity between wealthy and low-income New Yorkers and increasing affordable housing. On Sunday, Hochul officially supported Mamdani over veteran politician Andrew Cuomo, a member of one of New York’s most influential political families. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent.
“Affordability has long been my top concern as governor, and it’s the main issue I share with Mr. Mamdani,” Hochul stated. “As governor, I’ve taken steps like lowering middle-class income taxes and making school meals free for all students. But there’s still more to do.” She also criticized the current national leadership.
“In light of the harmful policies emerging from Washington every day, I need to ensure the next mayor won’t surrender an inch to President Trump,” Hochul added.
