DAVOS: President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he has established a framework for a potential agreement regarding Greenland after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. He also stated that he would cancel the tariffs previously threatened against European allies.
“We’ve formed the basis for a future deal concerning Greenland and the broader Arctic region,” Trump shared on Truth Social.
While he didn’t reveal specifics of the framework, Trump indicated that the tariffs scheduled for February 1 against resisting European countries are no longer happening.
“Based on this understanding, I will not implement the tariffs that were set to go into effect on February 1,” he added.
Trump’s ambitions to acquire Greenland, a strategically significant Arctic island, from NATO ally Denmark has caused significant upheaval in global markets and diplomatic relations.
During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, Trump distanced himself from the use of force, instead calling for “immediate negotiations” with Denmark to buy the island.
“If I decide to use overwhelming strength and force, we could become unstoppable — but I won’t do that,” Trump stated.
“What I want from Greenland is simply a place called Greenland,” he added.
Stocks on Wall Street opened higher Wednesday morning following his speech and surged further after his Truth Social statement.
Trump emphasizes that Greenland, rich in minerals, is crucial for U.S. and NATO security against both Russia and China.
