President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he would support defending Poland and the Baltic states if Russia’s aggression escalates, especially after Moscow’s recent breach into Estonia’s airspace. When asked if the U.S. would assist these European Union countries in the event of intensified Russian hostility, Trump responded, “Yes, I would. I would.”
Estonia has called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council scheduled for Monday, following the incident last Friday when three Russian MiG-31 fighters crossed into Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland. NATO and EU officials condemned this as a dangerous provocation, though Moscow denied involvement. In response, NATO’s Baltic defense mission scrambled Italian F-35s, along with Swedish and Finnish aircraft, to intercept and warn off the Russian jets.
Regarding the situation in Estonia, Trump confirmed he had been briefed and remarked, “We don’t like it.” This comes roughly two weeks after an incident where approximately 17 Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace. Trump initially played down that event, suggesting it might have been an error: “It could have been a mistake,” he told reporters on September 11.
