The plan has raised worries that Kyiv might be pressured into accepting a deal favoring Russia. Steve Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow soon, with Jared Kushner also participating. Trump has postponed his earlier Thanksgiving deadline, now stating he wants an agreement finalized immediately.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump pulled back from a Thursday deadline demanding Ukraine accept a peace plan supported by the U.S., asserting, “the deadline for me is when it’s over.” While en route to Florida for the holiday, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that negotiators were making headway with Russia and Ukraine, noting Moscow had made some concessions without elaborating.
A framework for ending the conflict, first reported last week, has sparked renewed concerns that the Trump administration might push Ukraine to sign a peace agreement heavily skewed toward Moscow. Trump indicated his envoy, Steve Witkoff, will soon visit Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin, and that Jared Kushner, who brokered the Gaza ceasefire, is also involved.
Previously, Trump had set Thanksgiving as the intended deadline for Ukraine to agree to a peace deal that would end Russia’s invasion. However, both he and his team have now shifted from a firm deadline, expressing a desire for a swift agreement. Trump suggested that Russia currently appears to be gaining the upper hand and that reaching an agreement would be in Ukraine’s best interest. He added that some Ukrainian territories “might be taken by Russia anyway” in the coming months and mentioned negotiations with European allies on security guarantees for Ukraine.
