President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu concurred during a White House meeting on Wednesday that the United States would intensify efforts to cut Iran’s oil exports to China, according to Axios, citing two U.S. officials familiar with the matter.
“We agreed that we will pursue maximum pressure against Iran, including restricting Iranian oil sales to China,” a senior U.S. official told Axios on Saturday.
In response to the report, China’s foreign ministry stated on Sunday that “normal cooperation between countries under international law is both reasonable and legitimate, and should be respected and protected.”
China is responsible for over 80% of Iran’s oil exports. Any decrease in this trade would lead to reduced oil revenues for Iran.
Last week, U.S. and Iranian diplomats engaged in discussions mediated by Oman aimed at reviving diplomatic negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Meanwhile, the U.S. has positioned a naval flotilla in the region as preparations continue for possible prolonged operations against Iran.
