President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin shook hands at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, during negotiations aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict, as reported by Reuters.
Washington announced that President Trump expressed deep disappointment in Putin and indicated that his administration is considering measures to reduce casualties in the ongoing Ukraine war, though he did not specify what actions might be taken. Trump also mentioned that he isn’t worried about growing relations between Russia and China.
After a summit with Putin in Alaska in mid-August, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European and NATO leaders at the White House. Following these discussions, Trump anticipated Zelensky and Putin would hold a direct meeting before a broader trilateral session including himself. Zelensky has indicated that Russia is actively blocking any potential meeting, while Russia claims the agenda for such talks is not yet prepared.
“I am very disappointed in President Putin, I can say that, and we will be doing something to help people live,” Trump stated during an interview on The Scott Jennings Radio Show. He assured Zelensky that the U.S. would help guarantee Ukraine’s security in any agreement and also reiterated threats of further sanctions against Russia if there is no progress toward peace.
Russia currently occupies approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory, and Trump emphasized that territorial exchanges and adjustments would be vital components of any resolution. Ukraine opposes the formal recognition of any territories as Russian but has acknowledged that some de facto territorial losses are likely inevitable.
When asked if he was concerned about an alliance forming against the U.S. among China and Russia, Trump responded, “I am not concerned at all… We have the strongest military in the world, by far. They would never use their military against us, believe me.”
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted Putin in China, referring to him as his “old friend.” Xi also held discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, a country that Trump has criticized over its Russian oil purchases.
