On Saturday, President Donald Trump announced his decision to instruct Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to deploy troops to Portland, Oregon, aiming to safeguard federal immigration facilities from what he labeled as “domestic terrorists.” He stated that the military was authorized to employ “full force if needed.”
Trump explained on his Truth Social platform that, at the request of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, he was directing the Secretary of Defense to send all necessary troops to protect Portland from attacks by Antifa and other domestic agitators targeting ICE facilities.
Portland’s Mayor, Keith Wilson, did not immediately comment. During a Friday press conference, Wilson mentioned that the increased presence of federal officers was not requested by the city, calling it an overreach and a distraction.
On Thursday, Trump told reporters that individuals he described as “crazy people” were attempting to burn down buildings in Portland, characterizing them as “professional agitators and anarchists,” although he provided no evidence to support this claim.
Throughout his administration, Trump prioritized tackling crime, even as violent crime rates decreased in many U.S. cities. His efforts to crack down on Democratic-led cities like Los Angeles and Washington D.C. have raised legal questions and sparked protests.
