On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced he ordered two nuclear submarines to reposition to strategic areas, citing threats from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
“I’ve directed two nuclear submarines to be placed in strategic locations, just in case these reckless and provocative remarks escalate,” Trump stated on social media, describing Medvedev’s comments as highly provocative.
He added that the move was precautionary, emphasizing that words carry weight and can sometimes lead to unintended outcomes. “I hope this isn’t one of those cases,” Trump said.
Recently, Trump and Medvedev, who is Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, exchanged fiery taunts. Trump previously gave Russia a 10-day deadline to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine or face tariffs, targeting Russia and its oil importers. Moscow has laid out its own peace proposals but has shown no intention of meeting Trump’s deadline.
Medvedev responded Monday, accusing Trump of playing “ultimatum games,” and reminded him Russia still holds nuclear options from the Soviet era as a last resort, after Trump advised Medvedev to “be careful with his words.”
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Medvedev has become one of the Kremlin’s most outspoken anti-Western hawks. Critics within Russia regard him as reckless, while some Western diplomats see his remarks as reflecting the prevailing mindset among senior Kremlin officials.
